Jay Mohr Sports / 1 Year Anniversary of #CopMonkeyBear
« on: June 23, 2014, 11:28:00 pm »
Tuesday, June 24 is the 1 year anny of Great Bluedini inventing #CopMonkeyBear. It was a fantastic afternoon of fun after he planted the seed, and then we made a little video game out of it. I added several new opponents to play against this evening.

Jay Mohr Sports / Countdown to Bakersfield!
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:22:58 am »
15 days! Who within 100 miles of Bakersfield doesn't have a ticket yet? This is already on track to be the BIGGEST JMS meet-up of the year. So go get your ticket now and post here when you do!

In the seat selector, it looks about 1/2 filled with about 400 seats left. They haven't opened the balconies (yet).

Jay Mohr Sports / Too complicated for radio – SportsNet/LA debacle.
« on: April 04, 2014, 01:00:27 pm »
I've been on this topic for a month now, but finally, there are hard numbers in the press that back up and exceed what Crazy Paranoid Brad has been spouting. Even Ramona Shelburne (senior writer, ESPN.com) called me nuts earlier this week on Twitter.

Here's an article about the breakdown in talks with DirecTV.

Although Time Warner Cable has not disclosed the price it is seeking from distributors, industry sources have pegged the fee for the first year of the contract at north of $4 per subscriber, per month with increases throughout the deal.

Other articles peg the number as high as $5/month per subscriber. That's $48 - $60 per year per subscriber. TWC is not offering any option of putting SportsNet/LA on a paid/premium tier. So, like your grandparents who don't give a shit about anything other than Wheel and Jeopardy get "taxed" $50+/year.

It's a horribly dishonest revenue model, and it's important that it fails. Regardless of what the YES network got away with in New York, it can't happen here. I'll double down on the dishonesty charge. TWC is just doing what they do. The Dodgers knew up front how this would have to work, because there is no other way to get that kind of revenue out of TV. They suck for being part of this.

Realistically, DirecTV and cable companies aren't gonna say yes for anything north of $0.50/month per subscriber or (far more likely) as a premium/paid station. The product TWC is trying to force down everyone's throat just isn't worth anywhere near what they think.

I think they've Dilaudid it.

Jay Mohr Sports / Tapped out today after Obamacare ad...
« on: March 25, 2014, 02:03:56 pm »
...and listened to Dave Mustaine episode of Mohr Stories.

JJ, here's the math. As a 43 year old self-employed guy with no kids, I buy my own health insurance. I'm not a hypochondriac. I have no pre-existing conditions. And I'm happy to buy my own cough medicine. My rates to switch to a "compliant" policy jumped $200/month last year. That's $2400 in disposable income that can't be spent on T-shirts and comedy clubs. Or put another, it's 4 T-mobile cell phone contracts. In return, I get crap I don't need, like pediatric dental and OB/GYN, you know, because my previous plan was a "sham plan" that wouldn't protect me if my baby teeth got a cavity or I got something stuck up my vagina (like this morning).

Benefit of the doubt to you, since this "have important guy on to talk about Obama's brackets and then he gets to tell us how wonderful the ACA is" is all over corporate sports talk now, and obviously comes from on high. I fled to sports talk 20 years ago because politics is shrill and all the players suck, and I'd just like a few hours a day when I don't have to hear about it. This month, all of sports media is breaking its deal with me. That's not 100% of your listener base, but I'd bet it's a good 1/3.

I'm gonna sit the competition out and just offer commentary. I looked at the empty bracket and realized I knew less than zero this year. 20 years ago, this time of year seemed magical to me.

Jay Mohr Sports / Re: Another Way of Thinking About Irsay
« on: March 20, 2014, 03:15:41 pm »
Irsay clearly has a legal entanglement, if not a drug "problem". McAffee was being a bonehead. The bigger problem about various drugs is a big public misunderstanding about addiction. Even with opiates, addiction is surprisingly rare. Among heroine users, the rate of addiction (versus "casual use", i.e. "used in last month or year") is like 10% - 15%. Drug policy people I read say that the pharmaceutical alternative (e.g. Oxycodone) are more addictive, yet still less than 30% for off-prescription users.

We don't really know where Irsay actually falls on the continuum. He might just like partying occasionally with the stuff, and until now, has kept his favorite way of having fun under the radar. The DUI is inexcusable, and he should make amends for that. But to beat the possession rap, he will probably have to admit a problem and complete some kind of treatment, regardless of whether he has a problem or a hobby that we frown upon.

I don't think we'll know Irsay's real deal for awhile.
