Jay Mohr Sports / Re: Jay, what does this mean?
« on: July 01, 2014, 10:06:33 pm »
JJ: Keep on trucking man. You are an inspiration to me, and a lot of us. Before this show, I first remember you from Jerry Maguire, your character Bob Sugar. I hated him in the movie. That's the sign of a good actor! Since then I saw many of your movies...and Gary Unmarried, it's funny how that played out. You played a guy that wanted so badly to be on sports radio, now it has come true. Also I was a former Rome listener, and loved your guest host stints there. Now you're on the big stage, but you keep it real...admitting to your mistakes, getting callers and Twitter folks involved. Doing stand up still, even though you probably don't need to. (Leno did the same, only lived off his stand up gigs). I loved your take today on memorizing lines in casting calls, especially Maguire....

As for the show, you're so much better than Rome. I know you won't admit to it, but his show had/has gotten soooo stale. I know your stance on him, so I won't go into that. But it's a great show.

Keep on doing what you're doing. If you're pissing someone off, you know you're doing something right.

And, finally, please book a stop in Indianapolis! There are lots of Mohrriors here

Living in Indy...we see him a lot more than those not from here. His physical appearance has deteriorated drastically over the past several years. He went from a robust 235 lbs (and in good shape) to 170 or so. Just do a Google image search of him from around the time the Colts won the SB to recently. He claimed the weight loss was bc of hip surgery and his docs advised it to ease his hip pain. He also has recurring back pain from football injuries he sustained while playing at SMU. The physical changes seem to indicate a pattern of addiction, not "recreational use." It's amazing and sad to know he's only 54. He looks 10 years older easily.

As someone who works in the addictions field i can also say that opiate (painkiller) addiction is one of the most dangerous of all of them. Due in part to the over prescribing of painkillers by physicians, and the addictive power of opiates. The road to becoming fully addicted to painkillers takes months in a lot of cases, not years. In lab tests with mice, they have observed opiate withdrawal after one dose of heroin. As more and more states are cracking down on physicians over-prescribing painkillers, heroin is making a big comeback. And unlike in the 70s, this stuff is nearly 100% pure. It's supply and demand. Less painkillers on the street, higher prices. Heroin is cheaper, and most new users aren't injecting it...they snort or smoke it. The stigma associated with IV drug use is still strong, so by snorting or smoking heroin, users think they're not "junkies". That said, heroin is still highly addictive.

Since I don't know the man personally, I can only speculate, but his usage is highly indicative of addiction, not just recreational "partying"

Jim may do well on a drug called Suboxone. It takes away the withdrawal symptoms and cravings, but does not produce a "high" (well in those addicted to painkillers anyway). It also blocks the effects of other opiates if someone taking it relapses and swallows a handful of pain pills.

Painkiller addiction is a huge epidemic, here is a good article about it.

Here is my take. First, great show by JJ today. Hearing from someone in the sports radio world that is in recovery sheds a lot of light for the rest of folks that don't understand the power and fury of addiction.

Now, my take on Kravitz. I'm an Indy local and read his work all the time. He's a hack. Has been for years. He is privately probably laughing his ass off at Irsay's troubles. They claim to be close...right. During the Peyton Manning saga that unfolded when the Super Bowl was in town there was quite a feud between the two. So I take what he writes with a grain of salt.

Now, on to Pat McAfee. To put it simply, he was a 2nd year player at the time, went out as many 23 year olds do, and got too drunk. Ended up swimming in the canal in Broad Ripple on a dare. Got busted for PI, suspended one game, and apologized in his own words (not some prepared statement). I'm sure most of us did pretty dumb things in our 20s. And he hasn't had an issue since. Since then he has become favorite around town. He does a lot of charity work, has his own radio show during the season, and is seen as a pretty likable guy and good dude. He also doesn't have a noted history of drug/alcohol abuse, so it's really an apples to oranges comparison.

Kravitz shills to the lowest common denominator. Occasionally he will write some good stuff, but most of it is typical modern day crap journalism. That said, the two incidents were night and day different in nature. McAffee was a kid having a bit too much and acting like a typical 20 something. Irsay is 54, and has battled addiction in the past.

Just my two cents, as I live here and have a more local take on things.

Not played as often...but "Hey! Matty boy!" is from the movie The Descendants. It's when Beau Bridges' character yells out to George Clooney's character. When Don Martin was still with Fox Sports they played. "Don!" and "Don's a good guy, he'll do right by us"...both from The Descendants.

Correction to the Hey Matty...I think it actually comes from another movie called Knockaround Guys..Jay will have to tell us for sure!

No, it's from Tombstone. It was discussed last year early on...if you watch that part of the movie you will hear it. The entire soundbite:

(Frank Stillwell) Hey Maddie! Where's Wyatt?
(Kurt Russell): Right behind you Stillwell!....then he shoots Stillwell.

Congrats JJ!

But wow, some of these rankings were jacked up. Rome at #3, ahead of Dan Patrick? They did realize Rome is hemorrhaging affiliates and can't be found on most major stations now, right? DP, like him or not, is a big lead in for a lot of noon shows, and is simulcast. Same goes for Mike and Mike.... I am not saying its a content matter. It's a presence matter. I read the criteria. And LeRetard at 14...dude shouldn't even make the list. I was glad to see that the national guys didn't dominate that top of the list though and some local guys got props

JFC I have too much time on my hands :uhh

Very well done. The crowd seemed cool to JJ early but he won them over.

Side note, Danica Patrick is a b***h. I am a big IndyCar fan and when she was racing there, she wasn't too popular in the drivers paddock. Stomping around when she didn't get her way, blaming her crew for a poor performing car...ugh.  Interesting to see things haven't changed. Can't even get a smile from JJ and some good natured ribbing. Good riddance.

Nice job, JJ

Well he certainly ran the Martin/Incognito story into the ground...seriously, did he talk about anything else those days? I finally switched to my local afternoon guy. Ugh, and this after JJ said he knew we were getting tired of it...I tweeted JJ and told him "we are beyond full" just to vent. Marriott is a d bag and I hope he never hosts again. That HAD to have been corporate's call...I know JJ took those two days to get better, which is fine. But please, don't subject me to that turd ever again.

Jay Mohr Sports / Here come the spammers....
« on: November 07, 2013, 06:37:36 am »
Having been a part of a once fun, now dead local sports radio message board...I see the end coming for this board. I just think it is sad...I am on twitter but find message boards a lot less cumbersome. Weeding through 4,532 tweets just isn't my thing. JJ, pimp the board. On the local board, we had a ton of laughs and actually got together for beers, golf, football, etc. in real life (local show, I know it can't be done on a national level). But it died out as we all moved on with life, and the same thing happened as people migrated to twitter. And the last thing left were the dreaded spammers with their "sales" of fake Prada, Gucci, and other crap.

I'd hate to see that happen to this board. Again, not all of us are huge twitter fans. Stucknut, for better or worse, seems to be chugging along ok...

Not sure if serious....but lighten up, Francis! Getting your panties in a bunch over smoking? Give me a break. Last I checked, it is still legal despite the health effects. So you're offended by Newport sports but not the endless jokes about Beyer eating children? GTFO

Jay Mohr Sports / Re: Fox Sports off Sirius/XM?
« on: October 19, 2013, 11:11:33 pm »
Well they lost my subscription. With Iheart radio I can listen to whatever XM has music wise (for my tastes, I am not some Deadhead or Eminem die hard that needs that station to survive, nor am I a Stern fan). The sole reason I kept it was Mohr and my player's ability to pause...guess I have to listen live like the rest of the world and miss what I miss when I go into sales calls. Oh and f*ck CLEAR CHANNEL, by the way. They are the evil empire of the radio and concert world.

Jay Mohr Sports / Fox Sports off Sirius/XM?
« on: October 18, 2013, 01:00:41 pm »
Went to listen today, and channel 247 is not Fox Sports. Robot voice saying "this channel is no longer available." WTF? I can listen on my phone, but I have a portable XM player in my car that lets me pause the show (I am in and out of my car all day due to my job)...which is cool bc I don't miss any of the show that way. Sirius's website still has Fox Sports listed....
